Sugar Vendil/Isogram makes interdisciplinary performances that interweave sound, movement, and non-narrative theater, forming connective threads that encourage closer inspection. Isogram blurs boundaries between genres and embraces nonlinearity to decolonize preconceived notions of performance, storytelling, and discipline. Founder and interdisciplinary artist Sugar Vendil (she/they), is a child of immigrants who is forging new creative pathways as a second generation Filipinx American.
Isogram has been presented at National Sawdust, Knockdown Center’s Ready Room, The New School’s Glass Box Theater, Mabou Mines, Target Margin Theater, and High Concept Labs in Chicago. In 2022, Isogram performed an improvisatory piece called Islands in the Sea at Amanda Phingbodhippakiya’s installation of the same name at Lincoln Center.
In 2026, Isogram will premiere “Antonym: the opposite of nostalgia.” (Presenter will be announced in 2025!) It was awarded an NPN Creation and Development Fund grant with co-commissioners Living Arts Tulsa, High Concept Labs in Chicago, and National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY.
“Antonym” collaborators are flutist Annie Nikunen (she/her), violinist Cindy Lan (she/her), and dancer/choreographers Marie Lloyd Paspe (she/her) and Annie Wang (she/her). The ensemble shared a work in progress of “Antonym” at High Concept Labs in Chicago in August 2023, a POP showing at Gibney March 2023 in NY, and will share the work at Living Arts in Tulsa, OK in October 2024.
