Artist Statement
I am a composer, choreographer, improvisor, pianist, and interdisciplinary artist. My work is intentionally jagged and asymmetrical, moving away from conventional forms to encourage deeper listening, seeing, and sensing. I used to be self-conscious about this natural inclination, but with our society’s current desire for hyper-optimized smoothness that leads to utter flatness, I now see the value of rigorously misshapen work. I’ve always preferred baroque pearls to perfectly round ones.

My compositions span acoustic and electronic music, and my interdisciplinary practice integrates sound, movement, and theater. I experiment with the physicality of producing sound, with instruments and voices to instigate new techniques and sonic ideas.

In my solo piano practice, live electronics are a form of extended technique where I pursue a new virtuosity to break free from my past as an aspiring classical pianist, establishing my own relationship with my instrument. My compositions go beyond solely fast fingers on keys, requiring the additional physical coordination of voice, looping, and processing in live performance.

As a self-taught choreographer, dancer, and composer, my practice is rooted in what I call DIY rigor. My approach to making work is analogous to the balance between survival and aspiration: when must limitation be fully accepted, or used as a resource? How and when should limitations be pushed? Is there magic hidden around the corner, or is all that’s available what’s within reach, and therefore must be utilized to its full potential?

My movement is heavily influenced by my practice as a pianist, my experience as a youth volleyball player, where I developed quick reflexes and explosive jumps, and dances I learned as a child in the 90s.

My work is autobiographical, both directly and obliquely. Vulnerability is central, as it’s where I find the most honest thing, and where fearlessness lies in its softness.
