ISLANDER is a music and movement suite scored for various keyboards, sarunay, and electronics. From the lens of a second generation Filipino American, the work examines the residue colonialism has left behind through centuries and generations, and explores the tension and loss that exists within one’s identity. Vendil’s longtime collaborator, composer Trevor Gureckis, will design electronic elements. Performed by Vendil and collaborators: pianists Melinda Faylor and Mary Prescott, and weaver Cynthia Alberto of Weaving Hand.
Islander is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by LMCC. LMCC empowers artists by providing them with networks, resources, and support, to create vibrant, sustainable communities in Manhattan and beyond.
