A showing of my new work in progress, “Antonym” (working title) performed by me, flutist Laura Cocks, and violinist Hajnal Pivnick,.
About Antonym
There’s no antonym for nostalgia. “Antonym” (working title) attempts to construct the thing we don’t have a word for: if nostalgia is a yearning for the past, “Antonym” longs for forward motion and envisions the future as an escape from pain. “Antonym” will be a multi-movement work scored for flute, violin, piano, and electronics. Using field recordings of New York City throughout the year, the four seasons serve as a cyclical frame and context for memory.
About Mabou Mines Resident Artist Program
Mabou Mines Resident Artist Program, established in 1991, is a laboratory for emerging artists to experiment with performance ideas. Once emerging artists ourselves, we understand the formidable pressures upon early career artists and the difficulty in finding a non-academic setting to explore new ideas. We believe that process-focused development is the best way to create original work and that the opportunity can prove crucial to an artist’s career. Mabou Mines’ Artistic Directors see it as our privilege and responsibility to guide new artists along the path we have found so rewarding.
The Program offers emerging artists the opportunity to work in residence at Mabou Mines for six months, receiving mentoring from our Artistic Directors and Associates, a stipend, rehearsal/performance space, and administrative and technical assistance. Participants attend monthly meetings, creating an artistic community through shared ideas in a forum-like setting. Resident Artists show their work at the program’s culmination. The showings are free to the public.
This program is supported, in part, by the Jerome Foundation and with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council.
